Now that you have completed the design and layout of your new title, the question to be asked is how do we create the finished printed product.
The options you will be given range between Digital (Print on Demand) and the more traditional Offset method. Regardless of any variation in the finished product of these two methods the final decision is largely driven by the Cost over Quantity equation. Or more simply put, the point of viability of either method is +/- 500 copies.
Modern Digital Printing Presses deliver a finished product the equal of Offset Lithography in colour resolution and stock substrates. They do not require the output of Printing Plates or create any wastage in achieving the desired finished product. However due to limitations such as the size of the sheet being printed and the lack speed the presses are at their most cost efficient on shorter runs
The greatest benefit of the Digital process is the ability to allow Self Publishers to cost effectively output quite small quantities of their title whilst still attaining a professional finish.
Another great advantage of Digital /POD is the reduced timeline in receiving finished copies. In most instances full delivery may expected within 7-10 days from final approval of artwork
For larger production runs the more traditional Offset process offers greater flexibility in the choice of format, stocks, and finish. Although there is a greater cost for the initial set up (outputting printing plates), the ongoing unit cost per book can be kept much lower. However you will have to pay for an entire production run up front and provide secure storage. Printing and delivery generally requires 2-3 weeks form approval of artwork.
It is important to remember that all book production is totally scalable from Digital to Offset should future demand require.
When considering the pros and cons of the two technologies a simple cost analysis and review of your working capital is required.
In all instances Publishing Productions are happy to provide advice, comparative costing, samples and dummies to assist your decision making process.
At this point there is no charge.
